Can heavy equipment simply hang from its front rack ears?

Only if the equipment is designed to be supported in that manner.

Many shallow and relatively light rack products are intended for front mounting only. Heavier or deeper equipment may require rear support, fixed rails, sliding rails or another mounting system.

The equipment manufacturer's installation requirements should be followed.
