What does 1U mean?

1U is one standard rack unit, equal to 44.45mm of vertical rack height.

Rack-mounted equipment is commonly described as 1U, 2U, 3U and so on. A 2U device occupies twice the nominal rack height of a 1U device.

The actual metal chassis may be fractionally smaller than the full theoretical height to provide manufacturing and installation clearance.
