What is a data cabinet used for?

A data cabinet gives network equipment a common home: patch panels, switches, PDUs, cable management and other equipment can be mounted, protected and organised in one place rather than gradually colonising shelves, desks and the top of the printer.

It also gives you a defined structure for cabling, access, ventilation and future expansion. It doesn’t, by itself, provide mains power, active cooling, weather protection or miraculous immunity from untidy patch leads — those are separate considerations.
