What is the brush opening actually for?

Its principal job is to provide a controlled front-to-rear cable passage.

Instead of leaving an entire 1U opening through the rack, the bristles close around the cables while still allowing them to slide through for installation or servicing.

It is worth distinguishing that from storing spare cable: the brush is a doorway, not a cupboard.

If the problem you are trying to solve is excess patch-lead length across the front, the ring version is the more relevant part of the range.
