Does the shelf need support from the rear rack rails?

No. It is deliberately a front-mounted cantilever shelf and has no rear-support provision.

That can look slightly implausible the first time you meet one — the back appears to be floating in mid-air — but the front rail and four fixings are the intended support.

Rear-supported shelves are a different design for deeper or heavier duties.
