What is installation cable used for?

Installation cable is the fixed part of a structured cabling system: the cable that runs through the building or between fixed termination points, normally ending on an IDC outlet, module or patch panel.

It is not simply a very long patch lead. The idea is to install the solid-conductor cable once, terminate it properly, test it, and then use flexible patch leads at the equipment ends where things are actually moved about.
