Why does the RJ45 socket have a shutter?

It keeps the socket aperture closed while the outlet is unused, reducing the direct path for dust and debris into the connector.

It is a useful little door, not an environmental seal; the module should not be mistaken for a waterproof or dustproof connector because the shutter happens to close behind it.
