Nuts, oh cage nuts......

They are cage nuts. Not sure what else to say. I have stuck some in my rack - they go in and come out quite easily - and attached switches and panels to them. Nothing has fallen down as yet. Nice to have the black ones to go with a black rack although I'm sure most people won't be that concerned with the aesthetics of their equipment racking!

Nice Product, small consistency issue

Cage nuts are delivered in resealable plastic bags containing 10 pieces of bolt, washer and nut in clip. Generally nicely made product and the washers do ensure a nice snug fit when tightening up. The two packets I had however both had a single nut in each that was not finished properly in terms of thread and would not accept a bolt. Shame but still reasonable value for money.

Nuts are black!

Was a little hesitant as i wanted black nuts too, but figured I would not really see them so ordered anyway. I was pleasantly surprised when they arrived that the nuts were also black, so major thumbs up. If I had to be absolutely mega picky, the screws could do with being a few mm longer, just to make life easier but they are long enough to do the job fine. The nuts are also very easy to clip in by hand (both a minor positive and negative) Overall I cannot rate these highly enough, or the seller. Very prompt arrival, faster than predicted.

Far superior price to what you would find in Music Stores

Bought these to populate a 12 unit rack, (which actually came with its own furniture, but) these are of a much better quality and a far, far superior price to what you would find in Music Stores, (both in the UK and Europe!). Had absolutely no issues with setting the cage nuts, the cup washers are a good fit and the M6 screws are a lot easier to use than the M5's that were supplied with my rack. Very Happy with my purchase.

Featured questions

What is an M6 cage nut fixing set used for?

It provides a removable M6 threaded fixing point in a compatible square-hole rack rail. The cage nut clips into the rail, then the rack screw passes through the equipment mounting ear and threads into the nut.

That is the usual arrangement for mounting patch panels, switches, PDUs, shelves and other rack equipment when the rail itself is not threaded.

What is included in a 10-pack?

Each pack contains 10 complete rack fixing sets: 10 M6 cage nuts, 10 matching M6 rack screws and 10 washers.

What does M6 mean?

M6 identifies the metric screw thread size used by the rack screw and cage nut. It is not the size of the square hole in the rack rail and it is not a rack-unit measurement.

Both the Standard and Premium fixing sets use the same M6 thread system and their screws and cage nuts have been cross-checked for interchangeability.

Are the Standard and Premium cage nuts interchangeable?

Yes. Both versions use the same M6 thread system and fit the same compatible square-hole rack rails. We have also physically cross-tested the screws and nuts between the two versions and they thread together correctly.

Premium changes the execution of the fixing rather than introducing a different mounting standard.

Will these cage nuts fit every 19-inch rack?

No. They are intended for compatible square-hole mounting rails that use cage nuts. Some racks have pre-threaded round holes or use a different fixing system, in which case an M6 cage nut is not the correct part.

Check the rail itself rather than assuming that every 19-inch rack uses the same fixing method.

How do I fit a cage nut into a square rack hole?

Fit the cage nut from the inside of the mounting rail so the threaded nut sits behind the rail. Hook one retaining ear into the square opening, compress the other ear and let it spring into the opposite side.

Make sure both ears are fully engaged before mounting the equipment.

Check the rail itself rather than assuming that every 19-inch rack uses the same fixing method.

Why does the nut move inside the cage?

The inner nut is deliberately allowed a small amount of movement so the screw can find and align with the thread even when the equipment ear and rack hole are not sitting with mathematical perfection.

A floating nut is useful; a nut wandering about like a loose shopping trolley is less so. The Premium version retains that alignment freedom with noticeably less movement than the Standard version.

Installation & mounting

9 questions
How do I fit a cage nut into a square rack hole?

Fit the cage nut from the inside of the mounting rail so the threaded nut sits behind the rail. Hook one retaining ear into the square opening, compress the other ear and let it spring into the opposite side.

Make sure both ears are fully engaged before mounting the equipment.

Which way round does the cage nut go?

The threaded nut sits behind the mounting rail and the rack screw approaches it from the equipment side. The spring cage clips through the square opening from behind.

If the nut is sitting on the front face of the rail, you have found an inventive but incorrect arrangement.

Should the screw be difficult to start in the cage nut?

No. Bring the equipment ear into alignment, start the screw by hand and make sure the thread engages cleanly before tightening it with a tool.

If it immediately feels wrong, stop and realign it. Cross-threading an M6 fixing is not improved by greater enthusiasm.

How many cage nuts do I need to mount a 1U device?

Use the number of mounting points specified by the equipment manufacturer. Many lightweight 1U products use four front fixings, but that is not a universal load rule.

The number of cage nuts does not determine whether a heavy device can be safely supported only from its front ears. Servers, UPS units and other heavy equipment may require rails, shelves or rear support.

Do I need a cage-nut insertion tool?

No. These can be fitted and removed by hand, and both current designs were easy to insert into the P Series rail during our checks.

A cage-nut tool can still be worthwhile when fitting a large number or when access is awkward, especially if you value your fingertips.

How do I remove a cage nut?

Support the cage from behind the rail, compress one retaining ear clear of the square opening and ease that side out, then release the other side. A cage-nut tool or small suitable hand tool can help where access is tight.

Do not simply lever hard against the painted rack face and hope the finish loses the argument.

How tight should I make the rack screws?

Tighten them enough to hold the equipment securely and keep the mounting ear flat against the rail, but do not overtighten them. Excessive torque can damage the screw, cage nut, equipment ear or rack finish.

For equipment with a specified mounting torque, follow the equipment manufacturer's instruction.

Do I need to use the washer?

Use the supplied washer unless the equipment manufacturer specifies another fixing arrangement. It sits between the screw head and equipment mounting ear, helping spread the contact and keeping the screw head from bearing directly on the equipment finish.

The Premium washer is retained on the screw, while the Standard washer is a separate loose plastic part.

Can I reuse a cage nut after removing equipment?

Usually, yes, if the cage still grips the rail properly and the M6 thread is undamaged. Inspect the spring ears and thread before reusing it.

Replace any fixing that is distorted, badly worn or rough enough that the screw no longer starts and turns normally.

Topic

Standard, Premium & compatibility

7 questions
What is the difference between the Standard and Premium fixing sets?

Both are compatible M6 rack fixing sets for suitable square-hole rails. Standard is the economical conventional option with a 14mm screw and separate plastic washer.

Premium uses the fixing style supplied with our P Series cabinets. It has a 16mm screw, retained metal washer, cleaner screw finish, a wider lead-in chamfer on the nut and less movement in the floating nut. In our hands-on comparison the Premium screw also engaged noticeably more smoothly.

Is the Premium version stronger than the Standard version?

We do not claim a higher load rating for the Premium set. Both are M6 rack fixing systems intended for compatible square-hole rails.

The Premium benefits we have verified are in fit, finish and handling: smoother thread engagement, a retained metal washer, reduced nut movement and more refined screw and nut geometry.

What makes the Premium screw easier to start?

The Premium inner nut has a wider lead-in chamfer and less movement inside the cage. Its screw thread also feels noticeably smoother in use. Together, those details make it easier for the screw to locate and begin threading cleanly.

It is a small piece of hardware, but anyone who has tried to hold a rack unit in position while persuading a reluctant screw to find a wandering nut will understand why small details acquire sudden importance.

What is different about the Premium washer?

The Premium version uses a metal washer retained on the screw. It can be removed, but under normal handling it stays with the screw instead of becoming a separate loose part.

The screw head is chamfered to sit neatly into that washer. The result is less fiddly when you are handling the fixing at the rack.

Are Premium cage nuts only for P Series cabinets?

No. They are the fixing style supplied with our P Series cabinets, but they are not restricted to them. They use the same M6 fixing principle and fit compatible square-hole rack rails.

As with any cage nut, compatibility depends on the rail and hole arrangement rather than the cabinet badge on the door.

Why is the Premium screw longer?

The Premium rack screw measures 16mm under the head, compared with 14mm on the Standard version. That gives a little more available thread engagement while remaining part of the same interchangeable M6 fixing system.

It does not mean that every rack-mounted product needs the longer screw; both versions fit the P Series mounting rails in our checks.

Can I mix Standard and Premium fixings in the same rack?

Yes. The screws and cage nuts are mechanically interchangeable and both versions fit the P Series square-hole mounting rails we tested.

There is no technical need for every fixing in a cabinet to come from the same range, although using one style consistently can make later maintenance a little tidier.

Topic

Troubleshooting

4 questions
What should I do if the screw feels rough or starts to bind?

Stop tightening it. Back the screw out, check the alignment and inspect both threads for damage or contamination. Start it again by hand and make sure it turns freely before using a screwdriver.

If the thread remains rough or damaged, replace the fixing rather than forcing it.

Why is the cage nut spinning or moving when I try to start the screw?

A little movement is normal because the inner nut floats for alignment. If it is moving excessively, make sure the cage is fully seated and the equipment ear is aligned with the square hole before applying pressure to the screw.

Start the screw by hand. If you attack a misaligned floating nut with a powered driver, the nut is likely to win the argument in a rather destructive fashion.

What should I do if the cage nut will not clip into the rail?

First make sure the rail actually uses compatible square cage-nut holes and that you are inserting the cage from the correct side. Hook one retaining ear in first, then compress the opposite ear into the opening.

Do not flatten or reshape the cage simply to make it fit an incompatible rail.

Can a cage nut damage the rack's paint or powder coating?

The spring cage contacts the edges of the square mounting hole, so some local marking can occur during repeated fitting and removal. Install and remove it carefully rather than levering aggressively against the visible front face of the rail.

The washer also helps keep the rotating screw head away from the equipment face while tightening.

Topic

Colour & appearance

2 questions
Does black or silver change the fit or thread size?

No. Colour is a finish choice within each range; the fixing standard remains M6. Choose the finish that suits the rack or equipment appearance.

Why would I choose black rack fixings?

Black fixings tend to blend into black rack ears and cabinet rails, which can give the front of a finished rack a more uniform appearance. The mechanical function is the same as the corresponding silver version.
