Overview

Close unused 3U rack space with a clean, fitted panel.

This 19-inch 3U blanking plate closes an unused position at the front of the rack, giving the cabinet a cleaner, more complete finish and separating fitted equipment from open rack space.

Covers unused 3U space

Fills an open 3U position at the front of the rack instead of leaving a visible gap.

Powder-coated steel

A solid steel panel with a powder-coated finish closes the unused opening at the cabinet front.

Sized for 19-inch racks

Its dimensions and mounting slots are matched to the 19-inch rack format for installation across the front mounting rails.

What does a rack blanking plate actually do?

It covers unused rack space with a solid panel.

That can make the rack tidier, reduce direct access to cabling behind the opening and, where the rack has a deliberate airflow scheme, help prevent air taking an unhelpful shortcut through an empty U.

It is deliberately unglamorous hardware, but it can do several useful jobs at once.

Are these blanking plates solid or ventilated?

They are completely solid apart from the mounting slots.

There are no ventilation holes or perforations in the panel.

Can I interchange the 10 inch and 19 inch blanking plates?

No. They are made for different rack widths.

Use the 10" plate in a 10" rack and the 19" versions in a standard 19" rack.

What are the dimensions of the 19 inch blanking plates?

All three 19" versions are approximately 485mm wide and 11mm deep.

The 1U version is 45mm high, the 2U version 90mm and the 3U version 134mm.

Do blanking plates improve cooling?

They can, but not by producing any cooling of their own.

In a rack with controlled front-to-back airflow, closing unused openings can stop warm exhaust air recirculating towards equipment intakes.

The plate is a barrier, not a refrigerator; its usefulness depends on what the air was otherwise going to do.

Why are blanking panels commonly used in data-centre racks?

A common reason is to close unused front rack spaces so hot exhaust air cannot easily recirculate through those gaps towards the cold side of the rack.

That helps preserve the intended separation between equipment intake and exhaust air.

Blanking plate basics

What does a rack blanking plate actually do?

It covers unused rack space with a solid panel.

That can make the rack tidier, reduce direct access to cabling behind the opening and, where the rack has a deliberate airflow scheme, help prevent air taking an unhelpful shortcut through an empty U.

It is deliberately unglamorous hardware, but it can do several useful jobs at once.

Are these blanking plates solid or ventilated?

They are completely solid apart from the mounting slots.

There are no ventilation holes or perforations in the panel.

Is a blanking plate only there to make the rack look tidy?

No. Appearance is certainly one reason to use one, but a solid blank can also form part of an airflow strategy and prevent casual access through an empty rack opening.

Which of those matters most depends on the cabinet.

A piece of metal does not acquire a single grand purpose merely because it has been screwed into a rack.

What are the blanking plates made from?

They are black powder-coated steel.

The 19" plates use 1.2mm sheet steel, while the 10" 1U plate is made from 1.4mm steel.

Do the blanking plates have sharp exposed edges?

No. The return edges are folded and the exposed edges are finished so you are not left handling a raw sharp sheet-metal edge.

What does 1U, 2U or 3U mean on a blanking plate?

It is the amount of vertical rack space the panel covers. A 1U blank covers one rack unit, a 2U blank covers two and a 3U blank covers three.

Think of U as the rack's vertical real estate rather than a measurement of the plate's depth or width.

Rack size & dimensions

5 questions
Can I interchange the 10 inch and 19 inch blanking plates?

No. They are made for different rack widths.

Use the 10" plate in a 10" rack and the 19" versions in a standard 19" rack.

What are the dimensions of the 19 inch blanking plates?

All three 19" versions are approximately 485mm wide and 11mm deep.

The 1U version is 45mm high, the 2U version 90mm and the 3U version 134mm.

Can I use a blanking plate in an open-frame or 2-post rack?

Yes, provided the rack is the correct 10" or 19" format and has suitable mounting points.

The panel only needs one mounting plane; it does not need rear support.

Can I fit a blanking plate to the rear rack rails?

Yes. Mechanically there is no difficulty in mounting one on the rear rails.

Whether that is useful is another question: front blanking and rear blanking can have quite different consequences for airflow, so I would fit it there because the rack layout calls for it, not simply because an empty hole exists.

Can another plate or rack device sit immediately next to it?

Yes.

The blanking plates stay within their allocated rack space, so correctly mounted equipment or another blanking plate can sit directly above or below.

Airflow & cooling

9 questions

Should I cover every unused rack unit with a blanking plate?

Not automatically. In a properly managed data-centre airflow arrangement, blanking unused front spaces is usually very sensible.

In a small passively ventilated cabinet, however, an open space may actually be part of the available air path.

Blanking every U on principle can become a slightly overenthusiastic exercise in tidiness.

Can fitting too many blanking plates make a small cabinet hotter?

Yes, in some layouts. If a small cabinet relies on passive airflow through a vented front door or open rack spaces, covering all of those spaces can reduce the free path available to incoming air.

A little wall cabinet is not a miniature data centre merely because it has rack rails, so its ventilation needs to be considered on its own terms.

Do these blanking plates allow air through the panel?

No. They are solid panels and have no passive ventilation openings.

Air must travel around them rather than through them.

Will fitting a blanking plate fix an overheating switch or server?

Not necessarily. Overheating has an airflow cause that needs identifying: intake temperature, exhaust recirculation, fan direction, blocked vents or simply insufficient air movement.

A blanking panel can be part of the remedy where an unwanted opening is allowing recirculation, but an overheating device is not merely a vacancy in search of a sheet of steel.

Is a solid blanking plate always better than a vented panel?

No. They solve different airflow problems.

A solid blank is useful when you deliberately want to stop air crossing an unused rack opening. A ventilated panel makes sense when that opening is supposed to admit or exhaust air.

Choosing between them without considering the airflow path is rather like choosing between an open and closed window without first asking whether the room is too hot.

Can I deliberately leave a rack space open for ventilation?

Yes, if that opening is genuinely useful to the cabinet's ventilation.

Do it deliberately, though. An open U used as an air path is one thing; a random gap left because nobody fitted the blank is another.

Does fitting a blanking plate at the rear have the same cooling effect as fitting one at the front?

Not necessarily. In a conventional front-intake, rear-exhaust arrangement, closing unused front spaces can help prevent exhaust recirculation.

Blocking a rear opening changes the exhaust side instead and could be unhelpful if that space is part of the hot-air escape path.

Treat front and rear airflow separately.

Mounting & fixings

5 questions
Are mounting fixings supplied with the blanking plates?

It depends on the rack width.

The 10" 1U plate is supplied with four M6 rack screws.

The 19" 1U, 2U and 3U plates are supplied without rack fixings.

What fixings do I need for the 19 inch blanking plates?

No fixings are supplied with the 19" plates, so use fixings appropriate to your rack rails.

On a normal square-hole rack using M6 cage nuts, that means the corresponding cage nuts, rack screws and washers.

How many mounting slots does each blanking plate have?

Each blanking plate has four rack-mounting slots.

Use the intended mounting points so the plate sits squarely and does not flap about.

Can I install a blanking plate without removing the equipment next to it?

Yes, provided the rack space itself is free and you can reach the mounting points.

The neighbouring equipment does not normally need to come out.

Does a blanking plate need any support at the rear of the rack?

No. It is a shallow front-mounted panel, not a shelf or piece of equipment extending into the cabinet.

The rack ears provide the mounting it needs.

Adding rear support would be an impressively elaborate solution to a problem the plate simply does not have.

Choosing sizes & rack layout

4 questions
Is there any real difference between one 3U plate and three 1U plates?

Functionally, very little if both arrangements cover the same 3U opening.

One 3U plate gives you fewer joints and fewer pieces of metalwork to remove.

Three 1U plates give you more flexibility if that space is populated gradually later.

It is mostly an exercise in convenience rather than competing schools of rack engineering.

Can I combine different blanking-plate sizes to cover a larger gap?

Yes. For example, a 3U and 1U plate can cover a 4U opening, or two 1U plates can cover 2U.

Just make sure the total matches the unused rack space.

What size is the 19 inch 3U blanking plate?

It measures approximately 485mm wide by 134mm high by 11mm deep overall.

Can I use blanking plates to reserve rack space for equipment I may add later?

Yes. They are a neat way to cover deliberately reserved U space until the future equipment arrives.

If the rack is likely to change frequently, several 1U blanks can be more adaptable than one large panel; if the layout is settled, a larger blank produces a cleaner expanse with fewer fixings.

Access, dust & protection

5 questions
Does a steel blanking plate make the rack more secure?

A little, in the ordinary sense that it stops someone simply reaching through an unused front opening to touch cables or components behind it.

It is not a security enclosure or anti-tamper system.

Think discouragement of wandering fingers rather than fortification.

Will a blanking plate keep dust out of the cabinet?

It can reduce the direct open path through that rack space, but it does not make the cabinet dustproof.

Air and dust can still enter through doors, vents, cable openings and other gaps.

Can I use a blanking plate to hide exposed cabling inside the rack?

Yes. If cables are visible through an unused rack space, a blank will cover the opening and stop them being casually reached from the front.

It does not replace proper cable management behind the panel.

Does the metal blanking plate provide certified EMI or EMC shielding?

No specific EMI or EMC shielding performance is claimed for these products.

They are solid steel rack blanks, but that alone should not be turned into a certified electromagnetic-shielding claim.

Can I use the blanking plate as a little shelf or mount equipment to it?

No. It is a blanking plate.

Do not load equipment onto it or turn it into an improvised shelf.

If you need to support something in the rack, use a rack shelf designed for the job rather than asking a flat panel to begin a second career.
